I've worked pretty hard with the other moderators to ensure that we get very little spam in the forum, so that you don't come to the site one day and see links asking you to buy Rolex Watches, or Cialis.

But apparently someone in China started automating signups and we had over 800 "applicants" applying for membership to the site in the spam of two days.

The site now asks a human challenge question (implemented this today).

As I checked the server this morning, it was unusually slow -- and this is a pretty powerful server.

It would take thousands of visitors per hour to make the server slow down. . .and to my surprise the site was getting what looked like thousands of visitors (the spam system was catching some of the applications, so not all were able to apply for membership).

As I investigated, and monitored the traffic in real-time, I noticed the hits were coming back to back from what appeared to be the same class "C" block of IP's -- when I checked the IP's all of them mapped back to China.

Right then is when I set the firewall to blackhole the entire country of China, which is like using a bazooka to kill a mosquito in a sense, since we do actually get some legit traffic from China, but I had to take action to protect the site, and you all as its members, and risk losing the little bit of legit traffic we do get from China.

Sorry about that China. . .don't mean to be socialist. :P

Those are unconfirmed signups.  The site has around 1,000 or so legit users. :)

The rest are unconfirmed or spam signups.
